Join us for a comprehensive 16-Hour Advanced Matrimonial Mediation Training. This program is designed to provide participants with an understanding of the conceptual backdrop, legal framework and advanced skills necessary to support their work in family and divorce mediation. Utilizing a combination of interactive exercises, presentations and comprehensive role-plays, this dynamic and engaging program will offer practical information and specialized techniques to effectively manage the financial and interpersonal aspects of matrimonial cases within the context of the law and the interests of the parties.
Topics covered will include:
- Harnessing the power of mediator understanding to assist the parties in reaching fuller, more comprehensive agreements.
- An introduction to the substantive law surrounding family and divorce disputes.
- Financial aspects of divorce and parenting issues.
- Specific advanced skills and techniques to address challenging family dynamics.
- A focus on the role of law and lawyers in divorce mediation.
Who Can Participate?
This is an advanced training and is only open to those who have completed a prior Basic Mediation Training. (If you are unsure whether your training meets this requirement, please call us at (917) 580-2253 to discuss.)
*Note that final placement on any court roster is at the discretion of the local Administrative Judge and participation in a course that is approved does not guarantee placement on a local court roster. Pursuant to Part 146, court-based mediation rosters require both a combination of mediation training and experience mediating. Acceptance on court rosters depends on a court’s need for mediators at any given time and may include a court’s need for mediators with specific case-type training or experience and mediation experience.
About the Trainers:
Sequoia Stalder, Esq.
Sequoia Stalder is a mediator and attorney with over a decade of experience mediating complex and high-conflict cases. Having mediated over a thousand cases, he has dedicated his career to the non-adversarial resolution of conflict and is a recognized expert in the mediation and conflict management field. He is the founder of Stalder Mediation, a mediation firm serving clients in New York City and the Hudson Valley. Sequoia specializes in family & divorce mediation, business and workplace mediation, and organizational conflict consulting.
In addition to his private practice, Sequoia regularly lectures and teaches in academic and public settings. He is an Adjunct Professor of negotiation and mediation at both Columbia University’s International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution (ICCCR) and Columbia’s Masters Program in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution (NECR). Sequoia also serves on the training faculty for the Center for Understanding in Conflict.
Sequoia is one of the most sought after mediation trainers in New York State, and his introductory and advanced mediation trainings are certified by the New York Courts to qualify judges, lawyers, therapists and other professionals to serve as court-referred mediators. His basic mediation trainings and advanced matrimonial and civil/commercial trainings are certified under New York State Court Rule Part 146. Sequoia has trained and counseled thousands of professionals in mediation and conflict management techniques.
Sequoia also holds the positions of Senior Director of Conflict Resolution Services and Senior Director of the Mediation Training Institute at New York Center for Interpersonal Development (NYCID), the New York State Court-designated Mediation Center for Richmond County. In these roles, he guides over 50 full-time staff and volunteer mediators and oversees all mediation programs and trainings, with an annual caseload of approximately 850 cases and 2500 case screenings. He previously served as a member of the Mediator Ethics Advisory Committee for the New York State Courts.
Adam J. Berner, Esq.
Adam J. Berner is a practicing Mediator and Collaborative Lawyer in the New York City and New Jersey area with offices in Manhattan, New York and Bergen County, NJ. Having worked in a general law firm, specializing in matrimonial and family law, he brings to his practice the experience and familiarity with the law and its alternative processes for resolving disputes. Adam’s practice of mediation, primarily in the areas of family, divorce, employment and workplace disputes, is based on the principles of facilitating understanding, enabling parties to work out their own agreements, according to their own values, priorities and schedules.
Adam is recognized as one of the most active mediators in the New York – New Jersey mediation community. He is a Past President of the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York where he has chaired the Continuing Education Committee and sat on the Board of Directors for 7 years. Adam served on the ADR Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York as the Matrimonial Committee liaison to the Committee. He is an Advanced Practitioner Member of the Association of Conflict Resolution (Family Section) where he also serves on its Training Committee, an Accredited Member of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation and the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators as well as a Certified Mediator at the Manhattan and Brooklyn Mediation Centers. Adam serves on the selective panel for the Matrimonial Mediation Pilot Program currently underway in New York County’s Supreme Court.
In addition to his mediation practice, Adam has an active Collaborative Law Practice. He is a founding member of the New York Association of Collaborative Professionals where he has served as co-chair of its Continuing Education Committee and currently serves on its Curriculum Committee commissioned to establish best practices of Collaborative Training. Adam also currently serves as the founding President of the North Jersey Collaborative Law Group, based in Bergen County, NJ.
In addition to his private practice, Adam is an Adjunct Professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law where, for over a decade, has taught Divorce Mediation in addition to having taught family law at the law school. Adam is an experienced trainer in mediation and A.D.R., having trained attorneys, court personnel, law students and corporate staff throughout the New York City area and is certified by the New York State Office of Court Administration’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Office to provide Basic and family mediation training. He has served as the Director of Training at the Dispute Resolution Training Institute for New York Center for Interpersonal Development (NYCID), where he still provides mediation training. Prior to that position, Adam also taught law and ethics at the undergraduate division of Yeshiva University.
